What Is The Difference Between Karate And Taekwondo

Taekwondo literally translates into the art of feet and fist while karate means empty hands signifying the importance of a mind empty of all desires and evils.
Hands are used more in karate whereas feet are used more in taekwondo. Karate evolved in the island city of okinawa in japan after imbibing some influences of chinese martial arts. Karate a martial art in which the ultimate purpose is not to seek to win but to work toward perfection of character and a strong body. A noticeable difference in the techniques in both these unarmed combat schools is that taekwondo typically places relatively more emphasis on kicking compared with karate.
Taekwondo is a martial art having influences from three old martial arts from korea namely taekkyon takkyon and subbak. The colored belt system was introduced to denote the rank and skill of the karate practitioner. Because karate uses many more hand attacks legs often stay grounded. There are some throws and joint locks taught in karate but they are not the focus of the style.
That does not mean that taekwondo does not involve punches hand locks and throws at all. As with taekwondo it requires solid discipline and strenuous exercise. A karate instructor is called sensei whereas a taekwondo instructor is called sa bum nim. How taekwondo is different from karate in taekwondo the emphasis is slightly more on kicks than punches whereas karate uses hand strikes more than kicks.
