What To Do Before You Get A Tattoo
Olivia Luz
Get a good night s sleep before your tattoo session.
In general treat the night before a tattoo like you would or should before a big exam. Sleeping on the new tattoo can also cause it to stick to the sheets and pull the ink off. You may need to roll up or remove any clothing that may be in the way of your tattoo placement. Wrap your tattoo when you re wearing irritating tight clothes that may rub and damage your tattoo.
Drink plenty of water. Wash all plasma and ink off with an antibacterial soap within one to two hours. If this is your first tattoo you ll probably want to schedule a day off for the day after the ink is done. Another thing to do in the weeks leading up to your appointment is to be cautious with injuries.
Your artist will disinfect the area and use a disposable razor to remove any hair. Drink lots of water for the 24 hours before your tattoo and avoid dehydrating yourself. As you need to avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight you ll probably want to avoid any beach vacations in the near future. While some experts recommend eight glasses a day your body may need more than that amount.

Before you go to get tattooed make sure that you are well hydrated. Get a good night s sleep eat a full breakfast stay hydrated and don t show up hungover or drunk. How much water you need to drink to be well hydrated will depend on your specific body. These can make it very difficult for the artist to tattoo the piece.
Schedule a day off. Even if it looks fine a new tattoo is an open wound after all and fitted clothing can adhere and tear away the ink. Keep your tattoo wrapped from when you leave the tattoo studio until you get home and into a clean environment. You ll want to be well rested before getting a piece of permanent body art.
The last thing you want is to have the shakes while someone draws with permanent ink on your body especially when attempting delicate line work. Wear loose shirts for the first weeks after getting a tattoo on the ribs. Your skin thins when you re dehydrated so chugging water starting the day before your appointment will make your body a better canvas for the tattoo.
