All reinforcers positive or negative increase the likelihood of a behavioral response.

These definitions differ from the way we use it in daily life. Punishment decreases the frequency. Reinforcement can be positive or negative and punishment can also be positive or negative. Both reinforcement and punishment are ways to achieve that goal but the methods have subtle differences that may make one better suited for your child.

Positive reinforcement refers to adding something pleasant. Reinforcement can be split into two categories. Punishment tries to make the behavior being punished stop whereas negative reinforcement tries to make the behavior being negatively reinforced occur more often. Both reinforcement and punishment can modify behavior.

While negative reinforcement refers to removing something unpleasant. The difference between them is that reinforcement aims to increase target behavior while punishment aims to decrease behavior. Punishment is a type of reinforcement. The result of reinforcement will increase the frequency of behaviour.

As nouns the difference between reinforcement and punishment is that reinforcement is uncountable the act process or state of reinforcing or being reinforced while punishment is the act or process of punishing imposing and or applying a sanction. Reinforcement means you are increasing a behavior and punishment means you are decreasing a behavior. A punishment is imposing a penalty on someone for an offence.

Conversely punishment will lead to the decrease in the frequency of behaviour. We are negatively reinforced by all kinds of things that end up leading to good consequences actually. The goal of discipline is to decrease the undesirable behaviors and increase the positive choices your child makes. Reinforcement causes behavior to happen more frequently while punishment causes behavior to happen less frequently.

Reinforcement strengthens response whereas punishment weakens the same.
