It was the culmination of a 55 day battle which left 3 000 french soldiers dead and 8 000 wounded. The viet minh victory in this battle effectively ended the eight year old war. The defeat was a complete rout for the french. The vietminh laid siege to a garrison of french troops who then surrendered. Lasting 55 days the battle had french troops attempt to hold an armed camp against the viet minh who greatly out numbered them. In the end of the 16 000 french troops fewer than 100 broke through the siege at dien bien phu with the rest killed wounded or captured.
The siege of the french garrison lasted fifty seven days from 5 30pm on march 13 to 5 30pm on may 7 1954. The french signed the geneva accords. Dien bien phu was situated in a valley in northern vietnam surrounded by mountains. Battle of dien bien phu fought between the french and the viet minh.

The fall of dien bien phu was a disaster not just for france but also for the united states who by 1954 were underwriting 80 of french expenditures in indochina.
