Basically it means we are to hold our parents in high priority. Matthew 15 4 esv for god commanded honor your father and your mother and whoever reviles father or mother must surely die. It would be so much easier if god had asked only that we honor our parents if they are good kind and loving to us but the command of exodus 20 12 is honor your father and mother period. Fathers do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.

There are many hurt and damaged people who find these commands nearly impossible to obey. Matthew 18 21 22 tells us to forgive others. How do we honor an abusive parent answer. Fathers do not exasperate your children.

However the bible also tells us not to do this repeatedly but no more than once or twice titus 3 10 11 matthew 10. They would apologize and try to make amends. However the bible tells us to treat other people we are to do so even more for our parents. In an ideal world toxic parents would realize the harm they had done to their children and feel sorry for it.

Parents are told to not cause their children any undue stress. The bible tells us to rebuke evil and try to turn sinners from their wicked ways in the hopes of saving them ezekiel 33 7 9.
