The blooms that were not cut off wither and become unattractive hanging on the stems. Unfortunately this isn t the case for lilies. Deadheading is the term given to removing the spent flowers from a plant. Deadheading is what to do when lilies have finished flowering.
Once a stem has finished blooming that s it. After the bulb flowers have faded deadhead the plants by removing faded blooms so that they won t waste energy producing seeds. Snip the seed pods off otherwise they put their energy into producing seeds rather than taking energy back into the bulb leave all the leaves and let them die back. In larger containers lilies can be grown on for a second season in the same pot but ensure that the top 5cm 2in of compost is replaced with fresh compost with some added fertiliser or well rotted manure.
