As a membrane it fulfils two major functions. This transparent membrane surrounds and protects the heart. It allows the frictionless movement of the heart and lungs as well as the organs of the abdominal cavity. The serous membrane is a single layer of flattened mesothelial cells.

Also known as serosa these membranes are found throughout the body usually surrounding organs. Serous membrane attach outer surface of lungs to inner surface of the ribcage allows for inflation and expanding what are peritoneal folds formations and what functions do they perform fused double layer serous membranes that suspend intra paroteneal viscera inside peritoneal cavity. Serous membranes are covered by a thin layer of serous fluid that is secreted by the epithelium. A serous membrane is a thin membrane that helps body parts move more easily and reduces friction between them.

Secondly it allows organs to move freely relative to one another. Serous membranes secrete a slight amount of lubricating fluid. This fact permits the organs to the movement of smooth muscles without any damage. The serous membranes perform number of functions that relate to the security of organs and body cavities that it encloses.

This allows movement of the smooth muscles without damage to the organs. Serous membranes are covered by a thin layer of serous fluid that is secreted by the epithelium. This allows the layers of the pleura pericardium and peritoneum to move in relation to each other and hence provides a certain amount of mobility to the ensheathed organs resp. Serous fluid lubricates the membrane and reduces friction and abrasion when organs in the thoracic.

The secreted fluid is called serous fluid. The function of a serous membrane the function of a serous membrane is to secrete a lubricant appropriately called serous fluid. The serous membrane forms two layers as the visceral membrane and parietal membrane. Serous fluid lubricates the membrane and reduces friction and abrasion when organs in the thoracic.

It also contains a thin film of serous fluid that allows the heart to move and provides it with a frictionless environment to expand as well as contract. Firstly it holds internal organs in place in the respective body cavity.
