Discipline is a way to teach kids to follow rules or correct misbehavior. Punishment focuses on past misbehavior and offers little or nothing to help a child behave better in the future. Punishment may be physical as in spanking hitting or causing pain. There is negative discipline and positive discipline.

It may require you to seek some counsel and training. Because in fact discipline is a very useful system for parenting while punishment is one tactic of many which can be used to support the discipline system. Punishment is quite different from discipline. While punishment focuses on making a child suffer for breaking the rules discipline is about teaching him how to make a better choice next time.

Discipline is all about learning new behaviour which is widely accepted whereas punishment is all about fearing a consequence of the wrongful act. Discipline is a positive method of teaching or correcting behaviour but punishment is considered as a negative method. People often use the terms interchangeably but there is a difference between the two. Good discipline teaches about how to make a better choice next time while punishment making a child suffer for breaking the rules.
