In other words to take the lord s name in vain means to use it in a manner that is not reverent. Not taking the lord s name in vain entails sticking with jesus again and again as the spirit helps us overcome sin and recreates our lives. The word vain as it s rendered in the esv can mean empty nothing worthless or to no good purpose we are forbidden therefore from taking the name of god or taking up the name or bearing the name as the phrase could be translated in a manner that is wicked worthless or for wrong purposes. Examples of using the lord s name in vain can include using god s names when cussing or swearing to misuse god s name in oaths to joke about god in an inappropriate manner or to belittle the name of god.
Essentially we are attempting to justify sin so that we can still sleep at night and not feel guilty. Through it all we realize our truest identity and purposes.
