I don t train police dogs. Retired police dogs need strong handlers who are able to stand their ground and give firm commands. This means that they are usually very responsive to commands but they may have a tendency to be aggressive in certain situations. Retired police dogs don t just suffer from the normal ailments associated with aging but also the serious wear and tear that comes from years of rigorous training and working including arthritis hip and knee injuries torn ligaments back and spinal problems.

In reality a police dog is trained to preserve life at any cost. It is important to know that retired police dogs are trained ones. Retired k 9s also need a strong handler who s firm in commands and in giving instructions. But these brave dogs are also taught to defend themselves in certain situations.

When they are around eight years old they are dispensed with when in fact they could have another four years of happy retirement. All get adopted though as far as i know. I just observe them. If you don t have enough experience as a handler then a retired police dog is not for you.

They are with him 24 7 when they work together and once retired they usually let the cop keep the dog as it is part of his family anyhow. Imo their original training is designed.
