The plug comes out when the cervix increases in size. It is also possible to lose your mucus plug during a cervical exam. It tends to happen from the 38 th week of pregnancy onwards though it can happen earlier. Shortly after conception progesterone causes cervical mucus to become denser thicker and more acidic forming the mucus plug.
