What Does The Bible Say About Lending Money
Olivia Luz
Scripture tells us borrowing money in some cases can be sinful.
When christians lend money to family and friends we should do it out of love not for interest. It is not wise to borrow. There are some cases where interests can be taken for example a business deal but we must watch out for greed and high interest rates. It s a caution about what happens when imperfect sinners lend and borrow from each other.
What the bible has to say about money isn t limited to these nine principles. Borrowing money is not encouraged in the bible but sometimes it is necessary and is certainly permitted. In what else shall he sleep. Proverbs 22 7 says the rich rule over the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender this isn t a warning to never lend money as some have used it.
All i m saying is that these nine principles appear to be the most prominent. We should never seek to borrow money but instead seek the lord for his provision. Remember there are roughly 2 000 bible verses about money and possessions which means there are way more nuances talked about in the bible than these nine. Additionally as the psalmist makes clear we are to repay our debts psalm 37 21.

The gospel is not about rules but this core relationship between a father and his children. Maybe you want to borrow some money from someone or maybe someone wants to borrow money from you. If ever you take your neighbor s cloak in pledge you shall return it to him before the sun goes down for that is his only covering and it is his cloak for his body. If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor you shall not be like a moneylender to him and you shall not exact interest from him.
God teaches us it would be very wise not to borrow. Lending should not be done so as to get rich but so as to help those in need proverbs 28 8. The decision about whether or not to borrow and or lend money is extremely personal. Perhaps that s because god longs for us to come to him directly with our questions.
