What Size Wire To Run To Detached Garage
Olivia Luz
One question i have has to do with wire sizing vs.
I m trying to wire 100 amps service off of my house s 200 amp main panel to my detached garage that s only 15 ft away maybe a total of 25 30 ft of wiring away. The total length of the run is about 80 feet. Keep in mind that the type of wire will depend specifically on how the sub panel feed will be installed whether the cable will be in a conduit or direct buried. I ve already dug an 18 trench and connected 1 5 conduit between the house and garage.
Think about upsizing wire or conduit is cheap labor and digging are not. Here is a calculator tool enter your cable run 150ft not the round trip 300ft. The wire size will also greatly depend on if the wire will be aluminum or copper. If you buy aluminum you have to go up one size in wire in this case it would be a 4 gauge.
We ran a detached garage with the following equipment and at times a very busy fab shop. The breaker in your main panel is sized to protect that wire. Most of it seems fairly easy to understand. I ve read what i could understand of the detached garage page.

For a garage i would recommend about 50 amps. The detached garage was fed by a 10 3 wire underground and hooked to a 30 a breaker in the house panel. My plan is to create a run from my main panel in my basement to the detached garage. I plan on installing a 100a subpanel in the detached garage which is to be fed off my main.
More about garage electrical wiring. Which would only require a 6 gauge wire size. I would like to have 2 15 amp circuits and 2 20 amp circuits in the garage.
