What Kind Of Rock Are Fossils Found In
Olivia Luz
There are many factors that can contribute to the likelihood of an organism being preserved as a fossil.
Sandstone shale limestone dolostone mudstone. Sedimentary rocks are shaped while sediment like sand or silt is compressed and turns into rock. Limestone sandstone shale and conglomerate are some of the sedimentary rock types that contain fossils. So most fossils are found in sedimentary rocks where gentler pressure and lower temperature allows preservation of past life forms.
Almost all fossils are found in sedimentary rocks. That is because most limestones consist partly or mostly of the shells of organisms. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks which are created by mechanical or chemical precipitation and not in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks which are created by mechanical or chemical precipitation and not in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
A few are found in slightly metamorphosed rocks and a few are buried in volcanic igneous deposits. Earth contains three types of rocks. Fossils cannot survive the elevated temperatures and pressures through which igneous and metamorphic rocks are formed. With rare exceptions metamorphic and igneous rocks undergo too much heat and pressure to preserve fossils.
