Biogeochemical cycles are a form of natural recycling that allows the continuous survival of ecosystems.

The term biogeochemical is a contraction that incorporates the biological geological and chemical aspects of each cycle. Biogeochemical cycles are named for the cycling of biological geological and chemical elements through earth and its atmosphere. Macroscopic cycles such as the rock cycle. The purpose in these cycles are to maintain balance and to ensure the ongoing process of the living and non living organisms in the environment.

Biogeochemical cycle any of the natural pathways by which essential elements of living matter are circulated from the nonliving components of the biosphere to the living components and back. A new cycle that is currently being studied by scientists is the mercury cycle. However the biogeochemical cycles function to conserve and recycle the matter that is part of living organisms. In biology the biogeochemical cycle is generally defined as the pathway through which the conserved matter moves within the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem.

The cycles move substances through the biosphere lithosphere atmosphere and hydrosphere. It is important for a few reasons. A biogeochemical cycle is one of several natural cycles in which conserved matter moves through the biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem. There are several biogeochemical cycles on earth including water carbon nitrogen oxygen phosphorous sulfur and rock.

The carbon phosphorus oxygen and nitrogen cycle are some of the important components that is required for sustaining life. Carbon is an essential element for all life so understanding how it moves helps us to understand biological processes and factors that influence them. In ecology and earth science a biogeochemical cycle or substance turnover or cycling of substances is a pathway by which a chemical substance moves through biotic and abiotic compartments of earth. Biogeochemical cycle enables the transformation of matter from one form to another form.

The biogeochemical cycle can be defined as the cycle with gets completed by the involvement of both biotic and abiotic components. The types of elements recycled can be either micronutrients or macronutrients. In biology conserved matter refers to the finite amount of matter in the form of atoms that is present within the earth. The purpose of geochemical cycle is to recycle the nutrients back.

As well as human induced cycles for synthetic. There are biogeochemical cycles for the chemical elements calcium carbon hydrogen mercury nitrogen oxygen phosphorus selenium iron and sulfur. The biogeochemical cycle is also involved in the flow of nutrients air water soil elements minerals and other organic molecules through different levels of the ecosystem. The byproducts of biogeochemical cycles assist the functioning of ecosystems.

The main role of a biogeochemical cycle is to recycle the elements on the earth.
