Fleas have four main stages in their life cycle.
The life stages of the cat flea ctenocephalides felis have many steps and it all starts with the laying of eggs. Depending on the environmental temperature and humidity levels the total life cycle will take anywhere from a couple weeks to many months. Optimal conditions for fleas are between 70 85 f and 70 percent humidity. Adult female rabbit fleas spilopsyllus cuniculi can detect the changing levels of cortisol and corticosterone hormones in the rabbit s blood that indicate it is getting close to giving birth.
The process can take anywhere from two to three weeks to several months depending on the conditions. The flea eggs depending on the environment a flea egg typically hatches in 2 to 21 days. Some parasites have sticky eggs that fasten to the animal. The total flea life cycle can range from a few weeks to more than a year depending on environmental conditions.
The third stage of the life cycle is known as the pupa stage. Once the flea eggs begin hatching they eat the flea dirt left behind by the adult fleas and will begin to build cocoons in about 5 20 days to transition into the pupae stage. The time it takes the flea to develop from egg to adult flea is affected by humidity temperature and food availability. The flea life cycle goes from egg to larva to pupa before the final adult stage.
