What Is The Function Of The Spinal Cord
Olivia Luz
Functions of the spinal cord the primary function of the spinal cord is to facilitate transfer of information from the brain to rest of the body and back.
The spinal cord is well protected behind the vertebrae that make up the spinal column. A component of the central nervous system it sends and receives information between the brain and the rest of the body. It is also a center for coordinating many reflexes and contains reflex arcs that can independently control reflexes. Although continuous with the brain the spinal cord begins where nervous tissue leaves the cranial cavity at the level of the foramen magnum.
On one hand it sends the sensory information from the sensory receptors spread throughout the body to the brain. What are the main functions of the spinal cord. The spinal cord is composed of neurons that send and receive signals along tracts towards and away from the brain. It is a long pipe like structure arising from the medulla oblongata part of the brain consisting of a collection of nerve fibres running through the vertebral column of the backbone.
It has the additional support of being surrounded by three tough envelopes called meninges which have clear shock absorbing fluid between them to help protect your spinal cord from impacts. It also carries sensory information back to the brain. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve fibers that extend from the brain stem down the spinal column to the lower back. It is a highway of communication from the brain sending messages to other parts of the body including instructing muscles that control movement.

The spinal cord is a slender column of nervous tissue that passes downward from the brain into the vertebral canal. These functions of the spinal cord transmit the nerve impulses for movement sensation pressure temperature pain and more. Spinal cord function can be split into three different areas. The spinal cord delivers the nerve messages from the body organs to the brain and vice versa the spinal cord is responsible for the reflexes a group of reflex action such as the withdrawal of the hand quickly when touching a hot surface.
