Patriotism refers to the quality of being patriotic i e.
We define patriotism as love for or devotion to one s country and nationalism in part as loyalty and devotion to a nation but the definition of nationalism also includes exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups. Since they differ in aim and focus they are also guided by different principles. Nationalism and patriotism also focus on different aspects. Patriotism is the feeling and expression of love for one s home country along with a feeling of unity with those who share those feelings though it shares patriotism s love of country nationalism is the belief that one s home county is superior to all others.
There are still obvious areas of overlap. Basically nationalism promotes self governance and authoritarianism to achieve independence while patriotism promotes values and beliefs to unify people and achieve liberty. Patriotism has peace as its substratum. Patriotism and nationalism are drilled into a person since childhood.
Nationalism means to give more importance to unity by way of a cultural background including language and heritage. In nationalism not only do people love their country but they actually put their country before themselves and others. The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does a nationalist.
