Fornication is the older fashioned term often used.
There is a difference between adultery and fornication. The modern dictionary definitions of fornication voluntary sexual intercourse between persons not married to each other which would include adultery and adultery voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful spouse are simple enough but the bible gives us greater insight into how god perceives these two sexual sins. Fornication is a voluntary sexual intercourse between persons not married to each other. Traditional dictionary definitions of fornication and adultery generally define fornication as sexual relationships between unmarried people and adultery as a sexual relationship between two people in which at least one of the people involved is married to someone else.
Strictly speaking adultery means sex between a married person and another who isn t the spouse of that married person. Both adultery and fornication are sins before god know ye not that the unrighteous shall not. Fornication refers to a person pursuing sexual contact outside of marriage without the benefit of marriage before marriage or even in marriage. The greek word translated as adultery is moicheia.
In classical greek porneia was used to refer to prostitution. Adultery illicit intimate sex between one man and one woman whereby the offender the adulterer is currently married. Fornication illicit intimate sex between one man and one woman whereby the offender the fornicator is currently not married. Obviously one partner may be a fornicator while the other partner is an adulterer.
