Both travel through their respective medium either air and earth while the particles constituting these mediums move in the direction parallel to the wave. Light waves are not considered mechanical waves because they don t involve the motion of matter.
Mechanical waves differ from electromagnetic waves because the energy is transferred through another medium such as the metal in a slinky rather than through a vacuum such as light through outer space.
