What Is A Coil Pack On A Car
Olivia Luz
Some coils are constructed in series and called cassette or sequence coils or coil rails.
A coil pack is an electronic piece of equipment within the ignition system. The main job of the coil pack is to increase and build the energy needed and then release the voltage through the spark plug cables. Coil packs provide better horsepower than distributors used in older vehicles. A coil pack is a collection of ignition coils that transforms power from the automobile s battery to generate sparks to the spark plugs that drive the engine s cylinders.
But by definition a coil pack is a group of ignition coils combined together in a single molded block. This electronically controlled pack consists of ignition coils that are controlled by the car s main computer. Generally speaking coil packs are much more reliable than distributors because there are no moving parts and because they fire much less often than a distributor. With this design each cylinder gets its own ignition tower but shares its coil with a companion cylinder.
An ignition coil also called a spark coil is an induction coil in an automobile s ignition system that transforms the battery s voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel. On a modern car coils come in a variety of shapes and sizes including a single coil that looks like a long plastic tube sometimes called a pencil or plug shaft coil one that incorporate an ignition module and another that looks like a domestic plug. Its main responsibility is to build up the energy and then release the voltage through the spark plug cables so it can reach the spark plugs and that s how the combustion process starts.
