He argued that legalized retribution violated the peace treaty with britain and opened the door for homegrown tyranny and mass violation of citizens rights. Some went to britain with the british army some ended up going to canada and settled in the province of nova scotia or new brunswick. Loyalists were not viewed positively by the patriots and others who had fought to overthrow british rule in the colonies.

However over half of the loyalists ended up resettling in canada. In fact living a safe life in the newly born country usa became hard for the loyalists.
