The black and white banner is especially noticeable given that puerto ricans are.
I am in an argument with a friend. Chosen to be the flag of puerto rico by nationalist cubans and puerto ricans this flag is considered the revolutionary flag of puerto rico. The flag is a symbol of the puerto rican people s resiliency and dignity most recently after hurricane maria and though there is no clear indication to who created the flag s design it is a perfect example of its people working together. The blue triangle on the flag s hoist side symbolized the three branches of government while the blue represented the sky and the ocean.
The white lines victory and peace. The flag was proclaimed the national flag of the republic of puerto rico by francisco ramírez medina who was sworn in as puerto rico s first president and placed on the high altar of the catholic church of lares thus becoming the first puerto rican flag. The original lares flag was taken by a spanish army officer as a war prize. The triangle contains a white five pointed star to signify the puerto rican territory.
The red lines the blood of the patriots of the revolution. A group painted over a famous mural of the flag with black. A door at 55 calle san josé painted with a mural depicting the traditional red white and blue puerto rican flag had become a familiar image of old san juan. It was created a few days after the obama administration passed the puerto rico oversight management and economic stability.

A sign of freedom. It was used in 2016 as a symbol of protesting the us s passing of promesa a law making a board control parts of the island s economy and having unpopular measures such as decreasing the minimum wage by three dollars. Since at least 2016 an all black rendition of the flag of puerto rico has been a symbol of puerto rican independence resistance and civil disobedience. The flag is not only a symbol of affirmation it is used as a symbol of resistance to colonialism.
So basically are black puerto ricans actually black like with a similar amount of african ancestry as any average african american or are they just darker than normal puerto ricans.
