Indeed the unbridled tongue can be like a fire rapidly spreading hurtful gossip and slander. One of the ways that the bible talks about the tongue or the words that we speak is by warning us about the sins of the tongue. The bible reveals that god places a strong emphasis on the sins of speech. Proverbs 15 4 a gentle tongue is a tree of life but perverseness in it breaks the spirit in this final bible verse about taming the tongue solomon sees a gentle tongue as one that gives life but when used in a perverse or evil manner it breaks the person s spirit.
2 for we all stumble in many ways. The way we speak reveals our character. James 3 8 but the tongue can no man tame. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.

James 3 9 10 says with the tongue we praise our lord and father and with it we curse human beings who have been made in god s likeness. But he that refraineth his lips is wise. We can use our tongue to bring blessings and life or curses and death.
James 1 26 if any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his own heart this man s religion is vain. The saying sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me is simply not true.
